One Community, Many Voices

The Hanukkah story speaks of both triumph and strife, illustrating how a group of people can overcome oppression despite internal challenges and disagreements. This narrative asks us to look at how we can exist as one community even with differences in practice, belief, and identification. Take part in an interactive experience in which our own stories of belonging and identity will become the basis for a one-night-only performance.

A facilitator will lead you through a 30-minute writing workshop to create personal essays and short stories based on real moments. After a break for refreshments, professional actors will read and perform a selection of these stories accompanied by live music.

Master Debater

Back by popular demand we are doing another Master Debater on December 3rd for NuRoot’s citywide festival of Infinite Light. We will again be pitting of some of LA’s most interesting minds against each other to argue, except this time we have added a new twist. The night's topics will be formatted into a high-school-debate-style, and will include some of to the crucial issues of our times and the times of the story of Hanukah!

We’ll gather at a popular theatre in Silver Lake, home to many of the east side’s cutting-edge art and music events. Latkes will be provided from Langer's Delicatessen-Restaurant and Wexler's Deli (yet another throwdown), and we'll have jelly donuts for dessert. Cash Bar will be available through the venue.

A safe space will be created for guests so they feel comfortable to share during the discussion on what they're willing to fight for and bring that idea together with the Maccabees fighting for what they believed in. Fiesta of Bites

Fiesta of Bites

Co-created by NuRoots Community Member

Fiesta of Bites is a fully catered taco dinner by L.A.'s premiere taco chef Wes Avila at his famed Guerrilla Tacos! Each of the bites on the menu will open up a conversation that weaves together the themes and history of tacos with the themes and history of Hanukkah — and Latin and Jewish cultures as a whole.

Not only are some taco ingredients (like potatoes) and cooking techniques (like frying) reminiscent of Hanukkah, but the overall tradition of tacos draws parallels, too. Tacos are all about resilience: a little rolled tortilla born from the silver mines of 18th-century Mexico is now a worldwide phenomenon. And so it’s fitting that on Hanukkah, the story of a great miracle, we'll reflect on how tacos have the ability to bring people together in celebration.
